Her work is represented in the collections of important art institutions throughout the world, and continues to be exhibited on the international stage. Still today, they continue to arouse enormous interest, as much amongst specialist critics and art historians as the public. Entering the first of the gallery spaces, the viewer is confronted by a giant bronze spider. She abandons her studies and seeks out the many workshops that Montparnasse and Montmartre were abuzz with at that time. Representations of plants, leaves and botanic forms are seen in works such as ‘The Smell of Eucalyptus (#1)’ (2006) and ‘Les Fleurs’ (2007). That same year, Bourgeois graduated with a first class BA (Honours) in Philosophy although her mother's death plunged her into a deep depression from which she would eventually decide to extricate herself by means of her art.
Following her father's sudden death in 1951, Bourgeois again suffers a deep depression during which she begins to develop her all-encompassing installations that spoke intimately of her memories, lived experiences and traumas. One-third of the pieces in the exhibition … 1945 sees the inauguration of her first ever solo exhibition, hosted by the prestigious Bertha Schaeffer Gallery in New York. In 1964, she comes out of isolation and organises her first solo exhibition for 11 years in which she showcases her latest work both plastic and organic and, for the first time, includes the concept of "lairs", the precursor to her subsequent and spell-binding Bourgeois's artistic trajectory would appear to broaden and flourish from 1973 onwards. Others are more ambiguous and abstract – the suspended unclassifiable accumulations in ‘The Fall’ (2007); the protuberant biomorphic contours in the diptych ‘Swelling’ (2007) and the gnarled structure in ‘The Unfolding’ (2007). This is emphasised by the wall sculpture, ‘My Blue Sky’ (1989 – 2003) in which a mountainous landscape dissolves the curves of the feminine body as they float up towards the loosely rendered blue sky – a colour that represented, for Bourgeois, peace, meditation and escape.
They articulate recurrent motifs drawn from her memories – memories she treasured and was traumatised by in equal measure. Nature serves as a powerful metaphor for growth and fertility, a need for peace with the self, with others, and with one’s surroundings.Progressing through the exhibition, passing by the window looking onto Oudolf Field, the visitor sees Bourgeois’s black Zimbabwe granite ‘Eye Benches II’ (1996 – 1997). “Art is the guarantee of sanity. Considered one of the most influential, powerful and profound creators of the 20th and 21st centuries, Bourgeois (1911 - 2010) persevered in the exercise of her very particular artistic imagination until the day of her death at the age of 98.Louise Bourgeois as the "mother of spiders". In 2007, London's Tate Modern organised a comprehensive Bourgeois retrospective in collaboration with the Georges Pompidou Centre, Paris.

Bourgeois saw the inauguration of her first solo exhibition in 1945. The exhibition then moved on to various museums in the USA.Exhibition curator Danielle Tilkin (in Spanish) describes Bourgeois' work as autobiographical, intensely retrospective, wholly independent of all other schools and movements, engaged in social discourse at any given time, full of black humour, critical distance, internal conflict and reflection on the past and present, reproduction, time and the constant cycles of life. There is a sense of fear and violence.To coincide with the ‘Turning Inwards’ exhibition, a presentation of portraits of Louise Bourgeois taken by Alex Van Gelder will be on view in the Implement Shed. At Bourgeois’s invitation, Van Gelder photographed her at her home, either going through the motions of her daily activities, or acting out various emotive states for his camera.Shown alongside Van Gelder’s photographs, Hauser & Wirth Somerset’s Book & Printed Matter Laboratory will be devoted to Louise Bourgeois.
For Bourgeois, the spider embodied an intricate and sometimes contradictory mix of psychological and biographical allusions.
